Science and Skepticism

"Before we can assess the experimental data of science, we need to learn the words of human language thru metaphor and analogy. . . . we must be patient with the language of science to learn what personal myth lies beneath it" - John Peter Thompson

  • 1. 1996: The Birth of Spiritual Neuroscience

1996, Tom Harpur published Life After Death. This is easily the best look at the cultural and scientific evidence of life after death I am aware of.  For me, Spiritual Neuroscience was born the day I was interviewed by Sleeping Giant Productions for their documentary on Harpur's work.  It tremendously influenced my next book Where God Lives.

This is Part Two of the conclusion. Click Here to see it. In it I clearly outline the concept of the God Spot and how it is linked to the all knowledge informational domain the children call "God".  I point out that near death experiences, after death communications, premonitions, past life experiences, mediums, energy healers and remote viewing are all the same process.

  • 2. The US Navy Inadvertently Proves Near Death Experiences Are Real in Perfect Laboratory Conditions

James Whinnery MD studied the effects of high G forces on Navy Pilots to understand how they would react to the G forces of flying F-14s.  These aircraft are capable of speeds twice the speed of sound.

Dr. Whinnery discovered that at the first stages of brain death, the pilots would have experiences similar to near death experiences.  He was able to show that the experiences occured only after the pilots became unconscious, had seizures and loss of muscle tone.  In other words, after complete unconsciousness, when they started the first stages of brain death, consciousness suddenly returned.

I worked with Dr. Whinnery at the National Institute of Discovery Science.  His experimental findings validated the prospective clinical studes of myself and Pim van Lommel.  We often talked about how amazing it was that a Pediatrician from Seattle and a Flight Surgeon would reach the same conclusions about near death experiences.

  • 3. The Turning Point: Near Death Research Overview 1995

This is actually a very nice overview of near death research.  I don't know of anything better done since then.  Ignore the sneering tone of the Turning Point Reporter and concentrate on the material they present: Specifically

    1. Madaleine Lawrence's study from Hartford Hospital.  This is precisely the same study that the United Nation's effort is trying to replicate.

    2. A young Pim van Lommel describes his prospective study of near death experiences in adults, ultimately published in the Lancet.

    3. A young Melvin Morse describes his research, ultimately published in the American Medical Association's Pediatric Journal AJDC.

    4.  Michael Persinger's study of attempting to replicate the experiences by directly stimulating the right temporal lobe.

    5. A fascinating interview with one of the early giants of the field Ken Ring

  • 4. Tom Harpur's Take on Science and the Near Death Experience:
Science Helps Us Understand the Spiritual Aspects of the Near Death Experience.

Tom Harpur's 1996 Life After Death is the textbook on evidence of life after death.  It has not been equaled.  If you haven't read it, you should do so now.

I love this segment on Science and Life After Death because Harpur, in 1996 already understood that it is Game Over for the materialists.  He is one of the first non-scientists to understand the implications of the science of the past 50 years and the birth of spiritual neuroscience.

This is the near death experience of a woman who undergoes surgery for a brain aneurysm (a ballooning of an artery in the brain) She has a near death experience in the operating room and accurately describes highly specialized operating room equipment she would otherwise have no way of knowing about.

  • 6. What is a Near Death Experience?  Kim Clark Sharp
Kim Clark Sharp reviews what is a near death experience, or at least a Post-Moody English-American Near Death Experience.  She goes over the various stages.  The subtitles and comments are mine.
  • 7. George Redonaia MD, Russian Psychiatrist, killed by the KGB

"We are most afraid of that which we cannot understand" -Dr. Rodonaia

This is the near death experience of George Rodonia, killed by the KGB, and according to him, spent three days in a Russian morgue before returning to life.  During that period of time, he "saw" a child with a broken hip in the hospital and when revived, told the child's physicians that the child had a previously unrecognized broken hip. He also told writer Paul Perry and  myself about a child with a broken arm.

I have met Dr. Redonia many times over the years.  He is an honest sincere medical professional.  With Dr. Redonia's active cooperation, I attempted to validate his story but was not able to, because of the lack of cooperation of Soviet authorities.

However, I did validate and find many medically documented cases of persons being left for dead in morgues, even for 3 days.  There are such cases in the modern medical literature, of coroners discovering that their cases were alive!  So that part of his story checks out.

  • 8. Awesome Hatchet Job on Raymond Moody by Turning Point!

Raymond is a true pioneer.  After he established the field of near death research, he moved on to more cutting edge research.  He has balls the size of mangoes, most other researchers at his age and status are simply collecting their royalties and lecture fees. He then did this cutting edge work on the Psychomanteum, trying to understand how to induce the near death experience. As Einstein said, if we knew the answers, it wouldn't be research.

  • Raymond Moody: Chair of Consciousness Research at the University of Nevada Los Vegas: His first lecture there!

It doesn't get any better than this. No PowerPoint. No props. No videos. Just Raymond, telling of his 30 plus years of knowledge.

The most telling debate about the current perceived conflict between Science and Religion/Spirituality comes from the movie Nacho Libra

Esqueleto: (Shermer)  I don't believe in God! I believe in Science.

Nacho: (Believer) I'm not listening to you.  You only believe in Science. That's why we never win (wrestling matches)

Esqueleto: (Shermer) Well I don't know why you are always judging me, just because I believe in Science.

Nacho: (Believer) Well we are going up against Satan's Cavemen so I thought it would be a good idea (if you believed in God this time)

This illustrates the quality of past and current debates on the issue.

The Science V Skeptic Debate Has Been Over for 20 Years! Spiritual Neuroscience Now Rules!

The Science Skeptic debate is long over for one simple reason:

Materialism is no longer the embedded scientific metaphor for reality.

Spiritual neuroscience is.  This is best seen in the areas of functional neurogenesis and informational theory.

John Peter Thompson and I recently wrote an essay on this. (Click here to read)
